With the ongoing launch of colourful new filler ranges into the South African market, patients may find it confusing determining which products they require for their individual concern.

The most commonly injected fillers are HA fillers. HA stands for Hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic Acid fillers at The Aesthetics HQ start from R2500 per treatment. Hyaluronic acid is the most prominent glycosaminoglycan found in the skin. Hyaluronic acid forms part of the matrix that allows collagen and elastin in the dermis of your skin to bind together (a function which deteriorates as we age).

When HA fillers are injected, you can expect the softening of skin and its appearance, as well as immediate volume and hydration. Hyaluronic acid fillers can be used to create volume (the cheeks or lips that you always desired); or recreate volume lost with aging or weight loss. HA fillers are also ideal for resting lines (wrinkles at rest); facial contouring and enhancement; hydration and promoting a rested, refreshed appearance.

Numerous great quality HA fillers are available in South Africa. While the Hyaluronic Acid is the common ingredient, the way that the hyaluronic acid molecules are arranged and bound within your filler will give it different properties in appearance. HA fillers boast specific products across the different hyaluronic filler ranges for deep facial contouring, superficial line correction, lip formulations, fillers for hydration amongst others.

Hyaluronic acid fillers are:
- safe
- predictable in their outcome
- cost-effective
- minimally painful to painless to inject due to the local anesthetic
- minimal to no bruising and swelling therefore no downtime
- can be corrected/removed should there be a rare occasion where it is necessary to do so.

How do you choose between fillers?
It is always best to rely on your expert medical doctor to assist you to select your HA filler. Remember – what worked for your friend or family member may not be ideal for you as an individual.

Selection of filler will be influenced by factors such as:
- age
- skin quality/condition
- degree of sun damage
- elasticity of the skin
- depth of injection required to correct your concern
- patient expectation of results/outcome

Dermatosis Papulosa Nigra is a common presenting condition at TAHQ, especially amongst darker skin types that we see (most often phototypes 4-6). As many as 40% of patients within these skin types suffer from the condition.

DPN is an extremely common condition, with a strong genetic component (so if your mom or dad or both has this condition, there is a good chance that you will too).

Dermatosis Papulosa Nigra presents as numerous small brown or black skin lesions, measuring between 1-5mm in diameter. They are commonly found on the cheeks, forehead, temples and around the eye. DPN can also present on the neck, chest, upper back or trunk of the body.

These lesions are benign (not dangerous) and the only problem that they pose is that they are cosmetically unattractive.

Lesions from DPN often start in the teenage years. As you age, they may increase in size, number and incidence (spreading to more areas).

Dermatosis Papulosa Nigra lesions will recur as it is genetic.

DPN can be effectively treated without permanent scarring at TAHQ using plasma technology. This quick, minimally painful procedure takes 15 – 20 minutes, and the costs start from R1000/session.
