If you struggle with the following skin conditions:  pigmentation, skin rejuvenation, antiaging, rosacea, open pores, sunspots and broken blood vessels, on both your face and body, Intense Pulse light (IPL) is the perfect procedure for you. This technology delivers an intense broad spectrum light that destroys specific chromophores by heating them up, and this is reabsorbed by the body. When treating lines and wrinkles the light bypasses the epidermis and gently heats up the cells in the dermis forcing collagen production.

1. What sets IPL apart from all other treatments is that it can handle all skin structures so all forms of skin conditions can be treated on one person.

2. It’s a comfortable treatment no numbing creams are applied before the treatment.

3. Very effective, most cases improvements are seen after just one treatment.

4. IPL stimulates collagen which enhances rapid healing.

5. It takes less than 30 mins to treat a full face, suitable for a quick lunch treatment.

WHAT TO EXPECT
Generally, 6 treatments are needed with 3 weeks intervals in between. A mild swelling and redness can be seen after the treatment, however, when treating veins the face always looks redder. Crusting could occur lasting a few days after the treatment.

*SPECIAL*

There are frequently conflicting arguments surround nutrient supplements.

Do you take them? Do you need them? Could they be harmful to your health?

Are vitamin and mineral supplements really just creating expensive urine?!

In the 1930’s, a new concept – the RDA (Recommended Daily Allowance) - emerged. The RDA is a suggested daily value or quantity required for essential vitamins and minerals that people should ingest, and you can find these on the back of your vitamin box. As a result, diseases such as Scurvy (from a vitamin C deficiency), Pellagra (Vitamin B3 deficiency) and Rickets (vitamin D and calcium deficiency) were prevalent before the rise of vitamin awareness, and the RDA give the levels of vitamins and minerals that you required in order to prevent diseases like these.

But now a new concept in vitamins and minerals has now emerged – the concept of optimum daily intake of vitamins and minerals. In this model as opposed to the RDA, you need take vitamins and minerals not at a level to merely prevent death and disease; you take vitamins and minerals for optimal health, i.e. levels considered high enough to function and live at your best.

This shift in mindset is becoming increasingly important to patient health. The world has changed, and keeps on changing. We are constantly exposed to increasing levels of pollution, radiation, and chemicals, not to mention that the pace of life is more stressful, on a psychological, social, and environmental level. Trying to supplement this with diet alone is futile, even an organic one: our soil in which fresh fruit and vegetables are grown has become progressively more nutrient depleted, especially of the metals we require as micronutrients.

Year after year, crops are planted into the same fields and pesticides remaining in the soil also bind our metal micronutrients in complexes, leaving them unavailable to the plants we eat. So, in order to reach optimum daily intake of many essential vitamins and minerals, kilograms of suitable foodstuffs may be required – impossible on a healthy 2000 kcal/day diet! Thus vitamin and mineral supplementation is essential for your best health status. Your optimum daily requirements are best discussed with your doctor, and will vary according to age. These values can differ in men and women, and with health conditions. Make sure that you are getting all the necessary dietary input that will help you look and perform at your ultimate best!

Many people are conflicted on whether or not to wear a sun-protecting factor and if it’s necessary for them to wear it if they are indoors or simply out on the beach tanning.

UV radiation, (ultra violet rays) from the sun reaches us in the form of UVB and UVA, UVB causes sunburn and contributes to skin cancer. UVA is responsible for causing premature ageing and pigmentation and this is active even when the sun is not shining and when you are under an umbrella and indoors.

You should always choose a sunscreen that protects you from both UVA and UVB. In South Africa with the amount of sun radiation we get a SPF30 and SPF50 will be sufficient. There are 2 types of sunscreens physical (mineral) and chemical filters. Physical filters are generally thicker and they protect the skin by deflecting the sun-rays. They contain titanium dioxide, which protects against UVB rays and Zinc. They protect us against the entire spectrum of UVA and UVB rays. It is FDA approved and it generally leaves a white cast or tint on the skin, if it rubs off easily then it must be frequently reapplied.

These start protecting your skin immediately after application and because of the zinc it is generally safe to use on delicate skin. Chemical filters on the other hand scatter the rays but some of them can absorb them, they can be a little irritating to the skin, some can cause allergic reactions and can make your eyes sting and watery. These however offer more coverage against UVB and UVA rays but the range always depend on the actives used and their stability. It is usually odourless and runny; generally they are safe but sometimes tend to generate free radicals. You must wait about 20mins for it to start being effective.

With all this knowledge at hand, most sunscreens now contain both physical and chemical ingredients to provide a broad-spectrum protection. It is very important to add a sunscreen in your skincare routine to all exposed areas such as the neck, décolleté; ears which are very susceptible to sun damage and reapply 4-5hrs when you are outdoors. Wearing hats and long sleeves help for added protection and to keep your skin beautiful and healthy.

Chemical peeling is an acid used to exfoliate the skin and remove dead skin layers to improve the appearance of the skin and regenerate new cells. Generally everyone is a good candidate for peeling as they helps with different conditions which include the following:

  1. - Wrinkles and crows feet

- Pigmentation and sun damaged skin
- Aging skin
- Sagging skin
- Acne and acne scaring
- Scarring

The most asked question is whether my skin is literally going to peel?
Treated areas gradually flake away and reveal a fresh new layer of skin. The recovery time depend on the type and degree the acid used. There are different types of chemical peels, superficial, medium and deep peels. Superficial/light peels penetrates only the outer layers of the skin to improve the appearance and refresh the skin without any downtime. These are usually your fruit acid peels, alpha hydroxy, lactic, salicylic and glycolic acid peels. These are designed for people wanting the benefits of a peel but do not want time to recover from the peel. Patients can return to their daily activities immediately after the treatment. These can be performed 2-4weeks apart.

Medium peels usualy penetrate your middle layers of the skin to remove damage skin cells, improving age spots rough skin pigmentation etc these are usually your glycolic or trchloroacetic acid peels, you generally need a few days to recover. New layers of skin start appearing 3 to 7 days after the treatment, this procedure can be repeated 2-4weeks apart
Deep peels are your trchloracetic and phenol acids which penetrate deep layers of the skin to remove damaged skin condtions such as pre-cancerous growths, scars, lines and age spots. With these dramatic improvements are seen and there is literally. The downtime on these peels will take 7-14 days for recovery. Complete healing can sometimes take up to 2months for the patient to see the full effect of the treatment. A series of these can be performed a number of times in a year but can not be an on going treatment.
The chemical solution is not only used on the face but can be applied on any other part of the body that needs treatment.
